    Description

1992 United States Air Force Kovatch Mobile Equipment (KME) A/S-32 P-22 Version 1 structural fire truck, 4x2. Used in excellent condition
    .
The P-22 series of fire truck is still in use in its Version 4. Some Version 1s are still around as reserve fire trucks. The P-22 4x2 series and its sister P-24 4x4 series appeared beginning in 1989 as direct replacements for the gas and diesel Ford / Ward LaFrance P-12 4x2 and P-8 4x4 fire truck series. These trucks were the primary structural and brush-structural fire protection trucks for USAF bases worldwide, and still remain in service in their most modern series, as well as these first Version 1 trucks of the series.
When the P-22/24 succeeded the P-12/8 series, several key design upgrades were made. For instance, there is no need for the engineer to engage the fire pump from inside the cab before exiting to the pump panel when on scene. Everything to control the pump is located at the mid-mount pump panel, via a master panel switch and a pump engage switch, with the elevated mid-mount pump panel giving the engineer an unobstructed view of the fire scene.
The P-22 for sale here is USAF registration 92L-125. Or the 125th P-22/24 series to be produced for the 1992 year, having been built in January 1992, with L being the USAF identifier for a fire vehicle. The P-22 Version 1 federal National Stock Number is 4210-01-259-8455. 92L-125 was built at KMEs Nesquehoning, Pennsylvania manufacturing plant and was delivered to its first USAF unit, the 129th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Wing of the California Air National Guard, Moffett Field Naval Air Station, California. There, it was designated Engine 5, and provided structural fire protection for the 129th HC-130 rescue planes and HH-60G rescue helicopters, in addition to the airfield crash fire rescue activities with the NASA Ames Research Facility, also co-located, as well as any other airfield or on-base firefighting requirement. In October 2004, the 129th Rescue Wing fire department was closed down and the fire department for Moffett Federal Airfield became the NASA Ames Fire Department, and operated under civilian contract. Some of the USAF vehicles were transferred to other USAF locations to continue their service.
In November 2004, Engine 5 was transferred to the 162nd Fighter Wing, Arizona Air National Guard, Tucson International Airport, Arizona. There, it served as the only structural fire truck for the ANG fire department there helping protect F-16 Fighting Falcon flight operations, as the rest of their vehicles were specific flightline crash-rescue trucks. 92L-125 / Engine 5 served until 2015 as both a primary and reserve structural engine, before being retired from services and being acquired by our contract fire company. We refurbished Engine 5, to include having it professionally painted back to its original USAF lime green color, as the red/white it had been repainted in during local maintenance at Moffett Field was severely sun bleached and faded; as well as a complete top overhaul of the Detroit 6v92 diesel engine performed by WW Williams corporation. See below for everything done to this great truck!  We utilized Engine 5 as a front-line structural engine and backup crash fire rescue truck just as the USAF did. Engine 5 still has a lot of life left in her, and would make a great addition to any fire department as a first or second out truck. Complete technical maintenance, operations, and training literature and manuals are included. Supply hose line and and attack hose line with nozzles included.
