    Description

Antique German Lidded Stein: Nürnberg Castle's (Burg) Sinwell Tower.
This century old stein is made of stoneware with a metal lid (lead?) and measures approximately 8" in height and a base of 3 7/8" in diameter.
The bottom is engraved with the maker's mark: TW [for Theodore Wieseler) and the words: “Gesetzlich Geschützt” -- a German phrase that translates as "legally protected" or "copyrighted."
‘Gesetzlich Geschützt' was adopted in 1876, meaning the design of the stein was patented and legally protected, and other companies were not allowed to duplicate the stein.
That should date the age of the stein fairly closely.
My guess is the very end of the19th century through the first decades of the 20th.
The stein is in excellent used condition without any signs that I can see of chips, cracks, or crazing.
Note: Monumental Miniatures lists a similar Sinwell Tower lidded stein from the 1920s and gives it a rarity rating of IV/V and a value of 4/6 (0-0). See Plate # 381.
