THE BATTLE OF WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA - Recovered in the New Quarter Area
    in October 2000
    -
3 fragments of relic condition melted camp lead. Soldiers often used cartridges as fire starters, and these masses of lead could also be the result of a bullet casting session. The larger piece appears to have visible rings. They measure 1 1/2" by 1", 1" by 3/4", and 1 1/4" by 7/8" and the total weigh is 1.9 ounces (the typical complete bullet weighed about an ounce)
These 3 fragments of relic condition melted camp lead were
found at the site of the Battle of Williamsburg, Virginia in the New Quarter Area in October 2000. This area saw action between Hancock’s Union brigade and D.H. Hill’s Confederate brigade during the May 5, 1862 Battle of Williamsburg. Fought on May 5, 1862 during General George McClellan's Peninsula Campaign, the battle saw 41,000 Union soldiers face off against 32,000 Confederates. Although the Union attack had some success against Johnson's Army, which was retreating towards the defenses around Richmond, the victory was not followed up on. Almost 4,000 soldiers became casualties during the battle.
A provenance letter will be included.
We include as much documentation with the relics as we possess. This includes copies of tags if there are original identification tags or maps, as well as a signed letter of provenance with the specific recovery information.
All of the collections that we are offering for sale are guaranteed to be authentic, and are either older recoveries, found before the 1960s when it was still legal to metal detect battlefields, or were recovered on private property with permission. Some land on Battlefields that are now Federally owned, or owned by the Trust, were acquired after the items were recovered. We will not sell any items that were recovered illegally, nor will we sell any items that we suspect were recovered illegally.
