    Description

For sale is a vintage souvenir building replica of the Burg Nürnberg (Nuremberg Castle). It is
one of the rarer varieties and
dates to the 1920s or 1930s.
It's made of lead and is quite heavy for its size, weighing approximately 3/4 lb.
Compare # 413 in Monumental Miniatures which shows a
    different
    bank version
    of this castle.
Like the one depicted I would rate this one a V/V in rarity with a value of 4/6 [0-0].
It is in excellent condition with an intact locked trap (no key). Undamaged traps are unusual in banks approximately 100 years old. The coin slot is in the roof.
It measures 3 1/2" wide by 1 3/8" deep by 2 3/4" in height to the tip of the tower.
The front of the replica reads simply: Burg-Nürnberg.
Visible on the rear left side, about an inch from the top can be seen the robber baron of legend* [
    Eppelein von Gailingen],
who escaped hanging -- from the gallows, visible above him to the rear -- by leaping the castle walls along with his reputed boast:
"Die Nürnberger hängen keinen – sie hätten ihn denn zuvor!").
See legend below for translation and see all photos as they form part of the description.*
Shipping includes insurance and signature tracking (to minimize the
    possibility
    of loss to 'porch pirates').
*Legend of the Robber Baron (from an online source):
    Beginning in the 1360s
    Von Gailingen
robbed merchants traveling to and from the rich commercial center of Nuremberg.
In 1369, he was indicted for his robberies by the Court of Nuremberg.... and
    ultimately
    sentenced to death by hanging.
As legend tells it, when the day of the hanging came his final wish was to sit on his horse one last time.
Since the execution took place inside Nuremberg Castle, the wish was granted.
Eppelein took the opportunity to escape by galloping to the wall and forcing his horse to jump above it into the moat.
On his flight from Nuremberg, he was met by a peasant who wanted to witness the execution of the famous robber baron and asked him if he would be in time to see the hanging.
Eppelein's purportedly responded, "The Nurembergians will hang nobody - if they hadn't (hanged) him before" ("Die Nürnberger hängen keinen – sie hätten ihn denn zuvor!"). --
This is exactly what is embossed on the rear side of the bank
    .
