Description
This neat example I dug from supporting camp of The Crater Battle. It is a conical cavity Enfield bullet. Dug within the Confederate lines. This example measures 1.070 in length. It has an unusual patina rust blobs. due to the fact it and about 10 others were dug inside of an iron pot. This is one of the last three dug. There’s more to read on internet. They used the rare hand grenades in this Assault also. Everyone always talks about the "Crater" during the Petersburg siege but there was another "Crater" event that happened at Vicksburg, which mostly goes unmentioned.
On June 25, 1863, the union exploded 2200 pounds of explosives under the Vicksburg line. The line was being guarded by the 3rd Louisiana Redan.
A crater was created by the explosion and the union infantry charge into the opening and into the crater and like at the future crater at Petersburg got trapped in the crater and were gunned down by the Confederates until a case-mate was built.
