History:
The Minié ball is a type of bullet that saw extensive action and use by both Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War. The soft lead of the Minié ball caused the bullet to flatten upon sticking its target. When impacting a soldier on the opposing side, the bullet devastatingly changed the types of wounds Civil War nurses saw on the battlefields as it shattered bones and destroyed tissue in catastrophic ways. With the newly found long-range accuracy, a standard .58 caliber Minié ball had a maximum effective range of 500 yards. Therefore, the Minié ball is recorded as being responsible for a majority of battlefield casualties recorded by both sides. Because of this bullet’s increased range, accuracy, and devastating impact it is single-handedly responsible for a majority of battlefield casualties, with Minié ball-induced amputations responsible for 3 out of 4 operations performed at Civil War hospitals. With the newly estimated soldier death count of the Civil War updated to 618,222 dead (360,222 from the North and 258,000 from the South) the rifle-musket and the Minié bullet are thought to account for a majority of the casualties.
