    Description

PerfectChristmas Gift ! Four Civil War Relic .58 Unfired Williams Cleaner Minie Balls and one Williams Regulation Minie Ball found in Central Virginia. Left to Right: Type I, Type II & Type III and the Regulation, the entire Williams family. With this study you’ll see a progression of technology. The zinc base was designed to scrape residue from the lans & grooves of a rifle barrel. It did work but the Type I was fragile, and the base was often compromised during firing and came apart, enter Type II with an improved base that was driven into the ball upon firing, an improvement, but it was hard to load and was replaced with a shorter and lighter ball with the same zinc base. The invention did work and you have all four Williams types represented here. Millions of the Regulation ball were made and sold. It was incorrectly  called a “Harper’s Ferry 1855 Rifle Ball” by early collectors. All were found in Central Virginia
