Kauer Super Chief Semi-Hollow Guitar w/ Wolfetone KauerBuckers – Butterscotch

From the mouth of the builder: “This new semi hollow features our biggest ever 15.5" wide semi hollow body featuring our I-beam internal construction, Spanish Mahogany core and neck with Maple or Spanish Mahogany front and back plates. Huge, giant sound that is unrivaled in clarity and punch.”
Despite its semi-hollow body, multiple members of the Guitars To Be Played team have commented on how uninhibited the upper fret access is on the Super Chief. The lower cutaway is fabulously deep and the heel is thoughtfully contoured. Even thumb-over-the-neck players will find ample room for their hand right up to the last fret. Also worth noting:
Sperzel Locking tuners and Dunlop Straplock-ready buttons come standard!
What Do We Think?
Compared to some other notable semi-hollowbody guitar examples, this one has a bit more get-up-and-go. It has the warm, woody vowels in the low register that you would expect to find, but a more crisp and responsive upper register thanks to the solid Maple top and back. The tightness and definition of the Maple is balanced perfectly by the Spanish Mahogany neck and core for tones that are equal parts rich, thick, articulate and percussive.
The Wolfetone KauerBuckers utilize fully-charged Alnico II magnets for a tone that is vintage at heart but with just the right amount of punch, especially from the bridge pickup. These ones have light foil covers with nickel surrounds instead of full nickel pickup covers, giving them a sweeter, more open and airy tone. It’s the little things that go a long way, and this guitar is right at home playing everything from Chet Atkins to Dickey Betts to Michael Pope.
How Does It Play?
Doug Kauer and team have done it once again! We don’t usually set guitars up this low but the PLEK’d neck just plays perfectly with string action of 4/64” on the low E at the 12
th
fret and 3/64” on the high E. No buzz. The medium C neck has enough substance to support the hand but not too much to get in the way. This guitar provides an extremely easy playing experience.
