Description
The Colonne d' Austerlitz in the Place de Vendome Paris; is a monument to the Grand Army of the Republic erected by Napoleon and made from some 750+ bronze cannon he had captured. The monument has a wonderful long history as it moved in and out of favor as the politics and temperament of the citizenry changed.
The column is a bronze copy of Emperor Trajan’s monument to himself in Rome.
The monument with its spectacular view of the city quickly became a must do stop for the Grand Tour of aristocrats, as they visited all the trappings of culture and class that their privileged upbringing offered them.
It quickly became a great favorite, and one of the best sellers among the well-crafted souvenir models that were being sent home by the aristocrats to decorate their Town and Country Homes.
This is one of the larger and more desirable ones from about the mid 1800’s.
Its large scale enhances the well struck details and decorations of the actual monument. The General is still on top and the fence is still in place.
The left rear corner of the base has a chip on it.
Otherwise this very showy model is free of dings, dent, and damage as far as I can see.
The near 200 year old patina is a rich warm bronze and it presents itself very well.
This is one of a large three piece set of high quality Paris monuments being listed separately.
It measures 5.5” square by 18” tall and weighs over 7 pounds.
