    Description

Kaluga’s Ploschad Mira Square has in its center a monument to the city’s most famous citizen – Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the father of the Russian space race. The monument was unveiled in 1958 on the 100th anniversary of the scientist’s birth. It depicts Tsiolkovsky in bronze confidently striding forward on top of a granite pedestal. Behind the statue there stands an 18 meter rocket and a museum to Soviet Rocketry.
This desk top model was produced as a presentation piece and while typically rough as Soviet Era manufacturing was, it does have a foundry mark not typical of this kind of work.
The model sits on a marble base and has been inscribed “To Jura, Happy Birthday, February 26, 1967”.
It is a wonderful souvenir of that whole cold war time period; and speaks to a very specific historical window when Russia was finding its place in the post war world, and proud of it.
    A large model, it measures 4” wide x 3” deep x 13.25” tall.
It is fabricated from mixed metals, possibly steel and bronze.
The metallic nature made this difficult to light for the pictures so that they convey true color.
The rocket itself has a copper/bronze tinted finish and the statue is has a dark brown patina on it.
