Description
Architectural Artifacts – Phoenix Title and Trust (The Orpheum Lofts) 1931 Entryway Bronze Birds. See period photoProvenance: I was a student employed part time in the building maintenance department at the Phoenix Title and Trust building from 1961 through 1968.
The building, now known as The Orpheum Lofts, has been on the National Register of Historical Places since 1985. About 1965 building management decided to modernize the entryways.
This meant demolishing the original 1931 bronze entryway and all material was being sold for salvage.
That work was carried out by the maintenance department.
I asked building management for and was given three of the four bronze eagles that adorned the entryway.
These can be seen in the photo taken about 1931.
A fourth was given to a coworker.
A pair are for sale here mounted on a wooden half round using the original mounting holes bolted to a marble base.
While they appear to be in the form of eagles, I prefer to think of them as phoenix birds rising from the ashes of the great depression. A real piece of Arizona history.
