sick
on this! From certain angles, you might think it's a black guitar, but as lights hit it, and especially under any sort of stage lighting, the metallic shimmer shines through beautifully with shades of greys and blues. The natural back and neck also give it a cool two-tone sort of vibe. We definitely think this
is a really cool look and brings some uniqueness compared to other PRS's.
After Paul Reed Smith befriended and picked the brain of guitar pioneer Ted McCarty, the first PRS McCarty models came out in 1994. They incorporated many of the subtle but essential build techniques that Ted used to create some of the best electric guitars the world has played. After a brief hiatus from the core PRS lineup, the McCarty is back. It's a straightforward but effective design that embodies that classic mahogany body/dual humbucker sweetness. The back is a little thicker for increased tone and sustain, and two of Paul Reed Smith's best new pickups pump out radiant sound in every register. This is a player's axe that's built to be played day after day, but it's also an important part of the electric guitar's history.
Killer looks and impeccable playability and tone aside, this one only weighs 7.1 lbs! That means you can wail away on stage all night long without having to worry about having a heavy boat anchor strapped around your shoulders. Perfect for the guitarist going for that LP-style tone but wants the traditional PRS 25" scale and wants a lightweight option, this McCarty is a player's axe through and through.

The PRS McCarty model pays homage to a legacy of innovation.  As the President of Gibson during a true golden era of guitar building (1950-1966), Ted McCarty was a pioneer of the electric guitar and musical instrument industry. In the late 1980’s, Paul Reed Smith called on Ted to consult with him on guitar design and production techniques. He not only served as Paul’s mentor but became a great friend of Paul and everyone he met at PRS.
In 1994, PRS released the first McCarty, an instrument that incorporated the full spectrum of techniques and knowledge Paul had gained from Ted as well as his own experiences as a guitar builder.  It is in honor of Ted McCarty – his knowledge, his friendship, and his memory – that PRS reintroduced the McCarty model.
The PRS McCarty model features a slightly thicker back for enhanced tone and sustain and the 58/15 treble and bass pickups, which were personally designed by Paul Reed Smith. 58/15’s are a vintage style pickup with exceptional clarity and focused midrange. Additional appointments include a push/pull tone control with a 3-way toggle pickup switch for a complete palette of tones, a bound rosewood fretboard, and PRS stoptail bridge with brass studs for added resonance.
