Description
I recently purchased a large military relic collection belonging to a man (now deceased) who metal detected back east in the 1980's, and also in NM, AZ and Texas after moving here to New Mexico in the 1990's, so watch my present and future auctions for alot of nice Civil War and Indian Wars dug and nondug relics from his collection.Rare Multi-ring .46 Cal Sharps bullet in dug condition. Looks like it might have started to melt, or was run over. This is either MM192 or 193 in the bullet book. This was in a plastic container that he had marked "Fort Fillmore". Please study the photos for condition. Great display item.
Fort Fillmore, New Mexico was established in 1851 by the 3rd Infantry and 1st Dragoons. It was officially closed in October of 1862. In the summer of 1861, Texas Confederate troops under Colonel John Baylor captured and occupied Fort Fillmore, and declared New Mexico as part of the Confederacy. In early 1862, Confederate General Sibley, with over 2000 Texas troops marched to El Paso Texas from San Antonio, and started his invasion of New Mexico. After the Battle of Glorieta Pass in Northern New Mexico several months later, the Confederates retreated back thru New Mexico and abandoned Fort Fillmore. It was again manned by Union troops for a short time before its permanent abandonment.
