Our adorable Stangl Chickadees on a branch figure is in
Undamaged Condition without chips, cracks, or mold damage.
The hand painting is well done. These little birds look almost real.
It is amazing that this fragile figure has survived intact and undamaged for so many years.  It has been well cared for.
The Stangl Pottery
Company
The Hill Pottery Company (the forerunner of The Stangl Pottery Company) was founded by Samuel Hill in 1814, in Flemington, New Jersey. Hill Pottery produced utilitarian items. After 1958 when Samuel Hill; the owner of Hill Pottery died the company was bought out by a former employee named Abram Fulper. He renamed the company The Fulper Pottery Company. Under Fulper's direction the company became well known and they extended their line to include stoneware articles and tile. In the early 1900s Fulper , now run by William Hill Fulper II, began experimentation with art pottery. In 1910 Mr. Fulper hired 22 year old Johan Martin Stangl as a ceramic chemist and technical assistant. Martin Stangl was soon promoted to superintendent of Pottery with full control of the plant employees including the foremen. In 1914 Stangl left Fulper and began working for Haeger Brick and Tile Company, but in 1918 he returned to Fulper and soon became Vice President of the company. In 1926 Stangl accepted the role as President .
When Stangle became president of the company he created the Fulper/Stangl logo.
Upon William Fulper's death in 1928, Martin Stangl bought William Fulper's share of the Fulper Pottery Company and changed the Fulper / Stangl brand names and logos to The Stangl trademark. The company did not legally change its name to the Stangl Pottery Company until December 28, 1955.
Stangl became known for its brightly colored table ware and reasonably priced art pottery. Production of underglazed mass-produced, hand-decorated dinnerware began in 1937. These dinnerware lines were the backbone of the Stangl Pottery Company's existence.
Stangl started producing bird figures in the mid 1930s. They became so popular in the 1940s that many workers were added to the factory just to supply these realistic, eye-catching creations.
Stangl continued to grow and produce art pottery and dinnerware through the 50s, which were their most productive years. In the 1960s Stangl continued to be a contender in the American market because of its ability to develop new ideas, styles, and shapes. New cheaper imports were affecting glass and pottery companies throughout the United States, Stangl remained a player through the 1970s when Martin Stangl died. Martin Stangl continued to oversee Stangl operations until 1971. Upon his death in 1972, the Stangl Pottery company was sold to Frank Wheaton. By the mid-1970s,  due to increasing cost of running a plant Stangl began producing white bodied dinnerware. In 1979 Pfaltzgraff purchased the Flemington Outlet and Stangl Pottery was closed.
