Built In Battery Powered Guitar Effects! Uber RARE!
This is really cool. You are looking at a
Vintage 1967-1968 Vox Phantom VI Special Electric Guitar. They really don't come much rarer than this one. What makes this so special is the built in effects in the pickguard. Kind of like having pedals at your finger tips. The Phantom VI Special feature 3-single coil pickups, a rotary 3-position pickup up selector switch, and a Trem (whammy) arm. The Phantom VI Special has onboard battery powered guitar effects operated by 6-push buttons mountedto the pickguard. These buttons operate the treble boost, mid boost, fuzz and repeat circuits. a second 3-position rotary switch toggled between 3-mid boost frequencies. Additional rotary controls are for the fuzz, sustain, repeat speed and volume. There is also an enabled "E" tone for tuning. The volume control is also an on/off switch.
****REPLACED HEADSTOCK****
When I received this guitar, the Headstock had been broken off and was missing. Our Luthier made a new headstock and re-attached it to it's neck. Excellent job. It is Solid and Tight. The wood is a close match. (See picture #8, #9, #10, #11). The Vox logo is not exactly right. It should say "Phantom VI Special". Also on the reverse side of the headstock, it says "Made in Italy by Vox". This may be a UK model because it has a 5-digit serial number. Vox did make some Phantom VI Specials in both Italy and the UK so it could be either.
So to Wrap up: New Headstock, Tuners, Trem arm, Knobs and a non-original vintage case. Everything else is all original best to my knowledge.
Brian Jones used the Vox Phantom in the early days of the Rolloing Stones. Think "Satisfaction" Tom Petty, Dave Davies and Ian Curtis are some of the notable players on the Vox Phantom VI Special.

Cosmetics: Excellent "Relic" Condition. Keep in mind that this is a 54 year old vintage guitar that has been used. A true Road Warrior. Very Authentic. Other than the aforementioned Headstock issue, this Phantom is in good shape. There are scuffs, scratches, chips dings and dents on both sides of the guitar. There are long vertical lacquer cracks due to age. They are NOT structural. Some light strumming scratches on the pickguard. neck as a few light dings in it. Fingerboard in great shape. Headstock (new) perfect. Non-Original Vox style case has some scuffs, scratches and minor tears in the Tolex. One of the latches is not working. The remaining 3 hold the case shut just fine.
Dripping with "Mojo". It is used. Not perfect. Overall, a really nice guitar. Look at the pictures closely. They will tell the story.
